‘The Real Ghostbusters’ Writer Wants a Series Revival

If you want to see new episodes of The Real Ghostbusters, you are not alone. Over three decades past the premiere of the show’s first episode, the animated series adaptation of Ghostbusters remains just as popular as ever with fans of the franchise. It’s obvious there are many fans who’d be up for seeing some kind of series revival of the classic cartoon, and you can count writer J. Michael Straczynski among them.

Straczynski played a vital role in the creation of The Real Ghostbusters, working as a story editor for the show’s first two seasons. He also wrote 21 episodes across the span of the series, which ran from 1986 to 1991. Last month, the toy company Hasbro unveiled a new line of Ghostbusters toys at Toy Fair New York with Jason and Ivan Reitman, and video footage of the event can be seen on YouTube. As part of the new toys included new Real Ghostbusters action figures heading to Wal-Mart this spring, a light bulb seems to have appeared above Straczynski’s head.

From Straczynski on Twitter:

Hey Jason Reitman, saw the video of you and Ivan Reitman at the Hasbro relaunch of Real Ghostbusters toys…wouldn’t this be a great time to bring back TRGBs? New animation? Live action? Puppets? Hand shadows? Semaphore? Hello? Is anyone there? Is this thing on?”

If you want my two cents, I’m in complete agreement with Straczynski here. It’s certainly awesome enough that we’ll be revisiting the original Ghostbusters movie universe when Afterlife hits theaters this summer, but as someone who holds the cartoon series with as much regard as the original films, I’d be just as stoked to see The Real Ghostbusters resurrected as well. Perhaps it will become a reality if Afterlife is a big success, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife hits theaters on July 10, 2020. You can watch the trailer below.
