Final Destination | Warner Bros.

Last year, we reported on the next Final Destination movie going into development from Saw franchise writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. At the time, it was believed that the sixth installment of the horror film franchise was going to be a reboot, perhaps set in an all-new universe with a “re-imagining” of the series. Updates have been rather scarce ever since, but now, it appears that Final Destination 6 may be sharing a universe with the previous movies with potential plot details revealed.

Speaking with Digital SpyFinal Destination creator Jeffrey Reddick and producer Craig Perry shed some new light on the project’s status, giving us a better idea of what to expect from the film. When asked about the upcoming Final Destination reboot, Reddick says he wouldn’t characterize it that way, suggesting that the film may be set in the same universe – although that still doesn’t guarantee it will have any storyline connections. He goes on to praise what the writers have been cooking up for us with this next installment.

From the interview:

“The horror geek in me is excited when they’re doing a new one, I really like those writers a lot. I’ve been talking to Craig and the concept behind it is unique. I think reboot is probably too strong of a word, it makes it sound like they’re going to change everything, but it’s definitely a Final Destination movie.

Craig is the master of coming up with crazy openings and set pieces. He’s told me a couple of things that happen in this one and it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s not going feel like cash-grab Final Destination film.”

For his part, Perry goes on to explain how the next film may follow first responders, i.e. the people who deal with death on a frequent basis as a part of their job, as it would be interesting to see how they would deal with this kind of situation. We’re also given a hint as to the trademark opening massacre scene, which could apparently involve a revolving door somehow. Sounds painful already.

As Perry explains:

“We’re toying with having it take place in the world of first responders: EMTs, firemen and police. These people deal with death on the front lines every day, and make choices that can cause people to live or die.

We rely on their good judgement, expertise and calm demeanour. So why not put those people in the nightmare situation where every choice can bring about life and death – but now for themselves? We’re thinking that world might be an interesting way into a Final Destination movie, and one which can also generate unique set pieces in a very credible way.

The last thing I’ll say is, I don’t think anybody will look at a revolving door in the same way again…”

As a fan of these films, I’m already looking forward to this next installment. Especially if the film is a sequel and not a reboot, I’m also demanding that the producers bring back Tony Todd for a special appearance, as it would definitely feel like something was missing without him.

No word yet on when the project may be released. Stay tuned for more info!
