The Others appears to be in the process of a resurrection with a remake in the works to reintroduce the film to modern audiences. Directed by Alejandro Amenábar, the film starred Nicole Kidman as a mother whose family is haunted by the supernatural at their secluded island mansion. The movie was a tremendous hit at the box office and rather well-received by critics as well, but nearly two full decades past its initial release in 2001, the film has never had a sequel and has completely avoided Hollywood’s reboot trend… until now.
Deadline reports Sentient Entertainment has just procured the rights to a remake of The Others, and the plan from the studio is to “reinvent and modernize the story.” Word is already making its way around Hollywood as well, with the project reportedly “attracting significant interest from A-list talent and studio backers.” Does this mean we’ll see something like Margot Robbie taking over the role originally played by Nicole Kidman? And it would certainly not surprise me at all to see her two children played by a couple of the kids from Stranger Things.
“I am honored to be able to work on my favorite horror film of all time, The Others, and to bring this reimagining to the big screen for new audiences,” Renee Tab of Sentient said in a statement. “It is almost eerie and uncanny how timely the themes are today: self-isolation, paranoia and fear, and of course the intense desire to protect our children and ourselves from harm. We look forward to unraveling the layers behind lead character Grace, whose pain and demons draw viewers into a truly compassionate journey.”
No word yet on when production will begin on the project, but given what’s been happening in the world lately, it’s fair to say it may be a while. For now, you can watch the trailer for the original film below.
Synopsis: While awaiting her husband’s return from war, Grace (Nicole Kidman) and her two young children live an unusually isolated existence behind the locked doors and drawn curtains of a secluded island mansion. When three mysterious servants arrive, it becomes frighteningly clear that there is far more to this house than meets the eye. In order to discover the truth, Grace must abandon all of her fears and beliefs and enter the otherworldly heart of the supernatural.
