White Spy and Black Spy might take their never-ending war to theaters in a live-action adaptation with Rawson Marshall Thurber directing. Anyone who has ever been a fan of MAD magazine will be very well familiar with the publication’s Spy vs. Spy comic strips, which have been featured in the magazine going back several decades. Each comic presents a short story of one of the spies outsmarting the other in clever and violent ways, with White Spy and Black Spy both winning just as often as they lose.

While we’ve seen Spy vs. Spy branch out from MAD in video game form multiple times, the duo have never had a live-action movie made. Now, Collider reports that new developments in a planned live-action projects are moving along, as Dodgeball helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber is in talks to direct a Spy vs. Spy film for Warner Bros. and Imagine Entertainment. John Kamps is also on board to contribute to the screenplay, though Collider theorizes Thurber may take a crack at the script as well, as he’s previously written almost every film he’s directed.
No details about a possible story or any casting options are yet available, but the obvious question most of us probably have at this point would be, “How do you make a live-action version of Spy vs. Spy?” I would assume it’d be a comedy about two spies constantly going at it with one another in comical fashion. At the very least, you’ve got to have each of them dressed either in all black or all white clothing to match the drawn versions of the characters. Still, something would seem like it was missing without those long pointy beaks. If nothing else, we’ll still always have the original comics and the animated versions for MAD TV.
