Ryan Gosling is our next Wolfman. Days after The Invisible Man with Elisabeth Moss was released on Blu-ray and DVD, Variety has reported that Gosling has signed on to star in a new movie from the studio based on the classic Universal Monster. The story is said to be a based on an original pitch by Gosling to be developed as a starring vehicle for the actor, and the story will reportedly be “set in present times and in the vein of Jake Gyllenhaal’s thriller Nightcrawler, with an obvious supernatural twist.”

As of now, no director has yet been signed on to helm the project, but Cory Finley (Bad Education) is reportedly among those considered. The movie has found its screenwriters, however, as Orange Is the New Black writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo have gotten on board to pen the script. Due to the coronavirus epidemic, it’s not clear when the project would begin shooting, but it looks like Universal is on the fast track to make production happen as soon as it’s safe to do so.
Written and directed by Leigh Whannell, The Invisible Man starred Elisabeth Moss as a domestic violence survivor tormented by a man who is invisible (as the title would suggest). On its modest $7 million budget, the movie turned out to be a tremendous success for the studio, banking over an impressive $126 million in the midst of a pandemic. Critically, the film fared fantastically as well, and we were in complete agreement here as you can see in our official review.
Not many can match the memorable portrayal of the classic Wolf Man by Lon Chaney Jr. in the classic monster movies from Universal, but Gosling is an excellent actor with the potential to succeed as the next guy in the role. If the film is on the fast track like it appears to be, we’ll probably find out more updates soon, so stay tuned. For now, you can revisit the original Wolf Man by watching the movie clip below.
