The wonderfully brilliant psychological horror film Session 9 is now streaming on Netflix in the United States. Released in 2001, the film is directed by Brad Anderson using a screenplay by Anderson and Stephen Gevedon. Additionally, Gevedon stars in the film as well alongside Peter Mullan, David Caruso, Brendan Sexton III, and Josh Lucas.
One of the most interesting aspects of Session 9 is that the film is set in a real-life abandoned asylum. Known as Danvers State Mental Hospital, the building has since been demolished, but not before Session 9 was able to capture its deteriorated interiors to let everyone see just how creepy it was. The eerie atmosphere adds so much more to the story than any kind of recreation on a set would provide, setting a dark tone that persists all of the way through.
For those who haven’t seen it, I won’t get into what happens here, but Session 9 is definitely one of those movies that doesn’t make much sense until the very end. It is also very well-acted, with each member of the ensemble perfectly cast in their roles. Session 9 is also notable for having the greatest on-screen, “F— you!” in the history of cinema, and you’ll definitely know it when you see it when you watch the film.
Synopsis: It looms up out of the woods like a dormant beast. Grand, imposing… abandoned and deteriorating, the Danvers State Mental Hospital, closed down for 15 years is about to receive 5 new visitors. Donning protective gear, the men of the Hazmat Elimination Co. venture into the eerily vast and vacant asylum that is filled with an evil and mysterious past. Rampant patient abuse, medieval medical procedure and rumors of demonic possession are some of the many dark secrets the hospital holds – but then so do each of the men.
