After Leigh Whannell released The Invisible Man under the Blumhouse banner to incredible success earlier this year, the studio has called back the filmmaker to take the reins for their next Universal Monsters movie. Starring Ryan Gosling as the titular monster, the new Wolfman film is said to be a modern take on the classic werewolf story. Jason Blum, who also worked with Whannell to produce The Invisible Man, is on board to produce Wolfman as well.

Full details aren’t clear on the plot of the new Wolfman, but word from The Hollywood Reporter is that Gosling will play an anchorman who becomes a werewolf. Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo wrote the screenplay, which is described as “having a vibe that evokes Network (1976) and Nightcrawler (2014).” Clearly, Whannell has proven that he knows how to properly help modernize classic monster stories, so his involvement in Wolfman certainly makes the project much more promising.

When The Invisible Man was released, it was tremendously successful at the box office. Worldwide, it grossed over $129 million on a budget of just $7 million. The critics were also very impressed, which is never an easy feat for any horror film to accomplish. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently sits with a Fresh rating of 91% with an audience score of 88%. Clearly, Blumhouse and Universal are hoping to see similar success with the release of Wolfman, but time will tell if they can capture lightning in a bottle for a second time.

Right now, it’s unclear when the project will go into production, and the coronavirus film delays could mean that it will take a little while. We’ll have to stay tuned for more updates. In the meantime, you can check out our list of 5 Essential Werewolf Movies to Seek Your Teeth Into!
