‘The Batman’: Gotham PD Spinoff Series Set at HBO Max

The Batman is already getting a spinoff television series, as Variety reports filmmaker Matt Reeves will work with Terence Winter to create a connected series for HBO Max. There is no title yet for the series, but word is it will be directly related to The Batman, which is scheduled for release on June 25, 2021.

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream,” Reeves  said in a statement.

The HBO Max series sounds similar in nature to the DC Comics series Gotham Central, which served as a police procedural series following a group of Gotham officers. As of now, it’s not clear if Gotham Central will serve as an inspiration for Reeves’ upcoming series, or if it will include any of the comic book’s characters. It’s also not clear if any characters from The Batman will be appearing in the new series, but it seems probable there will be some notable storyline connections between the two.

Of course, the series also sounds reminiscent of the Fox drama series Gotham, which took place in the years before Batman existed when Bruce Wayne was still a child. That show followed a younger Jim Gordon and his rise up to become the Gotham City Commissioner, though it did include many iconic villains and other characters from DC lore. As the HBO Max series will likely be set around the same time as The Batman, one key difference is that the new series could possibly show Batman himself appear from time to time, perhaps with Robert Pattinson reprising the role from the film.
