Discovery Channel has something very special planned for Shark Week this year, as the network is teasing a confrontation between legendary boxer Mike Tyson and a great white shark. Dubbed Tyson vs. Jaws: Rumble on the Reef, the event is being referred to by Discovery as “Shark Week’s main event,” with the show scheduled to air on the network on Sunday, Aug. 9. A teaser trailer for Tyson vs. Jaws has also been tweeted by Discovery to hype the bizarre showdown, and you can watch the video below.

A fight between a heavyweight boxer and a great white shark might sound amusing on paper, but given animal cruelty laws and the danger involved, it seems very unlikely Tyson vs. Jaws will feature an honest-to-god boxing match between the two entities. The teaser is intentionally vague so as not to let us know what exactly will be happening on the program, but it’s looking to be something much more comedic than bloody.
We may not ultimately see Tyson taking on Bruce the shark in a boxing match, but that doesn’t mean a return to the ring for “Iron” Mike is impossible. This year, the former heavyweight champion of the world has been posting videos online of himself training to get back into ring shape. He has been teasing the possibility of stepping out of retirement, perhaps as a way to raise money for various charities in need. Possibly because of social distancing measures, no return date has yet been set.
