‘Twisted Metal’ Series Moves Forward with ‘Cobra Kai’ Writer

Twisted Metal (Sony)

Cobra Kai writer Michael Jonathan Smith will write a Twisted Metal TV series adaptation based on an original take by the writers of Deadpool. In 2019, we reported that Sony was developing a new TV series based on the popular video game franchise. The project has just taken a big step forward with Sony announcing that the series is officially a go with Smith writing the script.

Described as an action comedy series, Twisted Metal is based on an original take by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of the Deadpool and Zombieland movies.  Smith, Reese, and Wernick will also executive produce alongside Will Arnett. There have been rumors of Arnett voicing Sweet Tooth in the series, but this has not been finalized or confirmed.

Twisted Metal is one of the most beloved franchises from PlayStation,” said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, in a statement. “We are thrilled to have such a great team working on bringing this iconic game to life for the fans.”

Sony Pictures TV executive vice president of comedy development adds: “We love Twisted Metal in all its twisted insanity. Michael Jonathan Smith hit it out of the park with an action-packed, brilliantly funny adaptation and we are grateful for the support of Rhett, Paul, Will and our friends at PlayStation.”

Per Variety, the Twisted Metal series is about a “motor-mouthed outsider who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown named who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck, whom fans of the game will know as Sweet Tooth.”

Gamers will remember Twisted Metal best for the series of video games on the original PlayStation and its subsequent iterations. The last game in the series was released in 2012 for the PlayStation 3. It’s not yet clear which network or streaming service the Twisted Metal TV series will land. Stay tuned for updates.
