It was announced back in 2020 that Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan will adapt the Fallout video game universe for the small screen via Amazon Studios. New details are starting to emerge as development moves forward. It was confirmed today that Walton Goggins (Hateful Eight, Sons of Anarchy) will star in the series.

According to Variety, sources say Goggins will play a character “based on the ghouls from the games.” In the Fallout games, a human ghoul suffers from prolonged radiation, which extends their lifespan and makes them immune to the surrounding effects of the fallout. While some ghouls are mindless, feral creatures whose brains have been ravaged by ghoulification, this isn’t always the case. Some ghouls remain as aware, intelligent, and even charming as their “smooth skin” counterparts.

As one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood today, if Goggins is to play a ghoul, there is no doubt his character will go the way of Fallout New Vegas’ Beatrix Russell or Fallout 4’s John Hancock versus a feral ghoul. Although, Goggins as a putrid glowing one would be interesting.

It was previously confirmed that Jonathan Nolan will direct the first episode of the series with Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider) and Graham Wagner (Silicon Valley, The Office) serving as showrunners. Bethesda Game Studios’s Todd Howard will serve as an executive producer.

As of now, nothing is known about the show’s plot or characters, but this first casting announcement is definitely an exciting one.

With the first titular game released in 1997, four main titles were released in the series with five spin-off titles, including the fan-favorite Fallout New Vegas in 2010. The universe is set in a post-apocalyptic, retrofuturistic world. The post-war landscape is rife with mutated animals and insects, radiated food and water, ghouls and other monstrous creatures, and human threats.
