Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer
Disney+

It’s here! The teaser trailer for the Disney+ Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi was dropped without warning today. He rides the sands of Tatooine atop an Eopie, first seen in the Star Wars Special Edition. “The fight is done,” Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) narrates. “We lost.” We know this means a new fight has just begun.

The series’ showrunner, Deborah Chow, will direct several episodes along with a few others from the growing Disney+ team that has been assembling since The Mandalorian started. Casual Star Wars fans will be pleased to know that Chow directed two of the best episodes of The Mandalorian, including “Chapter 3: The Sin” and “Chapter 7: The Reckoning.” Obi-Wan Kenobi is in good hands, but his own hands are full!

The unmistakable designs of the new Sith Inquisitors are heavily featured in the trailer. Inquisitors first appeared in The Clone Wars animated series and again in Rebels. Sith Inquisitors are charged with hunting rogue Jedi who survived Order 66. Obi-Wan isn’t the only Jedi who slipped through the Empire’s young fingers, but he isn’t safe yet. And neither is his remote ward, Luke Skywalker.

We glimpse the adolescent Skywalker as he plays pilot at the Lars Homestead. That kid is dying to tell his friends he’s the new Luke Skywalker, though there’s no telling whether we’ll see him up close in the series. Obi-Wan’s voiceover instructs, “Stay hidden.”

The music in the trailer bridges the prequels with the original trilogy. Obi-Wan’s story here is set ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, so Inquisitors will have had ample training to take on Jedi, even if the Stormtroopers are mere recruits instead of the clones who fought alongside the Jedi in the prequels.

The narration by Obi-Wan gives us the sense that our hero is dejected and has resigned from the fight. He’s a long way from the call to action brought to him by Princess Leia Organa via R2-D2, but his abilities will certainly be put to the test. He will have to defend himself from Sith Inquisitors who clearly sense his presence on Tatooine, but he will have to lure them off-world and convince them they only sense him. Luke may be young, but the Force is strong in this one.

The highly anticipated series will appear on May 25th only on Disney+.
