Rob Zombie’s The Munsters will show a softer side to the horror director. As he’s typically known for pushing the envelope in every one of his movies, from his directorial debut with House of 1000 Corpses to the more recent Three from Hell, there was speculation that his reboot of The Munsters would be filled with bloody violence and lots of foul language. Now, it’s clear that’s not the case.

Officially, The Munsters has been rated PG. The rating is for “macabre and suggestive material, scary images and language.” There’s apparently nothing to warrant so much as a PG-13 rating, meaning Zombie is giving fans his first family-friendly film.

Rob Zombie wrote and directed The Munsters, a movie he’s wanted to make ever since switching from music to filmmaking. The cast includes Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman, Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily, and Dan Roebuck as Grandpa. Also starring are Richard Brake, Jorge Garcia, Sylvester McCoy, and Catherine Schell.

“Everything fell the way it should have, and Jeff (Daniel Phillips) is perfectly cast, and he will be so entertaining in the part of Herman. Sheri (Moon Zombie) is so delightful as well,” Roebuck said of the cast in an exclusive interview with us here at HGL. “I actually auditioned years ago for the part of Herman in one of the TV movies that didn’t turn out so well. It just wasn’t meant to be. I’m glad I didn’t land the role of Herman, and I’m not trying to talk down about that particular project, but it’s not what Rob’s film will be.”

He added, “It’s gone through the hands of so many other people, and I know Rob wasn’t just looking for something to attach his coattails to. He’s a huge fan of it, and being a life-long fan approaching this material, it really is as good as it gets. I know Sheri, and nobody works harder than Sheri Zombie. I’ve written a part for her in a movie I wrote and directed, as well as another film I co-wrote and co-directed, so that’s what I think of her talent. I think she’s terrific, and I absolutely love working with her.”

The Munsters doesn’t yet have a release date, but it is rumored to be released on streaming and in theaters in 2022.
