This Weekend: In Theaters

M3GAN (January 6)

M3GAN, the new AI doll horror film from Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, will be released in theaters on January 6th. It tells the story of “a robotics engineer at a toy company [who] builds a life-like doll that begins to take on a life of its own” after gifting a prototype to her lonely niece.

If you like the murderous doll subgenre, don’t miss this one.

Candy Land (January 6)

Coming to select theaters and Digital is John Swab’s Candy Land. The film follows It Follows’ Olivia Luccardi as Remy,” a seemingly naive and devout young woman who finds herself cast out from her religious cult. With no place to turn, she immerses herself into the underground world of truck-stop sex workers.”

The Menu (HBO Max – Released)

The Menu, starring Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Reed Birney, Judith Light, and John Leguizamo, is one of the year’s most successful horror films. “The intensity and nail-biting dialogue, accompanied by a brilliant score and beautiful cinematography, make the film well worth the watch,” says our review.

The film is now available on the HBO Max streaming platform.

The Pale Blue Eye (Netflix – January 6)

Based on the 2003 Louis Bayard novel of the same name, The Pale Blue Eye is a Netflix Original that follows Augustus Landor, “a world-weary detective [who] is hired to investigate the murder of a West Point cadet. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case – a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe.”

Playing Augustus Landor Christian Bale while Harry Melling takes on the role of Edgar Allan Poe. The film also stars Gillian Anderson, Robert Duvall, Lucy Boynton, and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches (AMC – January 8th)

AMC will premiere the first of 8 episodes of Mayfair Witches this Sunday. Based on the popular Anne Rice novels, Dr. Rowan Fielding is played by series lead Alexandra Daddario. The cast includes Harry Hamlin as Cortland Mayfair, Tongayi Chirisa as Ciprien Grieve, and Jack Huston as Lasher. According to our review, audiences can expect to be “immersed into a world of witches, the likes they have not seen before.”

New episodes will air on AMC and AMC+ every Sunday.
