It looks as though we’re headed to the backwoods of Burkittsville once again, as a new Blair Witch movie has been reported to be released by Lionsgate.

According to BloodyDisgusting, Haxan Films, the company that produced the 1999 film is also attached to the upcoming sequel, with the original’s directors and writers, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez signed on as producers.

Since the release of the 1999 film, Myrick has mostly stuck to feature films, including Believers, Under the Bed, and Skyman, while Sánchez has dabbled in a plethora of successful shows, like Lucifer, Supernatural, and most recently, Showtime’s Yellowjackets.

It seems the new film has already found its director, as well. Oliver Park, who most recently directed the surprising 2022 Jewish folklore-themed hit, The Offering, will be taking the directorial reins.

Park is relatively new to directing, but does have a few horror shorts and a movie titled A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio under his belt. Coming into an extremely famous horror franchise is a huge step for the young director.

1999’s The Blair Witch Project was an absolute atom bomb in Hollywood, both putting the found footage horror sub-genre on the map and making almost $249 million against its $60,000 budget, becoming one of the most financially successful horror movies of all time.

The franchise has yet to capitalize on the same kind of success with its sequels. While Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 made its budget back and more, the film is notorious for being a weak continuation.

Adam Wingard, who has made a name for himself with You’re Next, The Guest, and Godzilla vs. Kong, tried his hand with Blair Witch in 2016, and it was a financial success, but is otherwise known as a lackluster film.
