Warner Bros. and New Line were both expecting The Nun to make money. After all, The Conjuring and its followup films have proven to be big hits at the box office. Still, expectations for The Nun ticket sales were thought not to surpass a certain point, and it’s now clear that the film is already performing far better than the studios anticipated.

The New York Times reports that initial expectations for The Nun were in the area of $36 million. This figure is based on some of the negative early reviews for the movie, and this is around what Annabelle: Creation pulled in. Instead, the movie broke the franchise’s record by setting the new highest opening weekend ever, raking in about $53.5 million in U.S. ticket sales. Overseas, an additional $77.5 million was earned, and that alone more than triples the film’s $22 million budget. Love it or hate it, The Nun has proven to be a big moneymaker!

The Nun is the fifth film in the series so far. Previous entries include The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle, and Annabelle: Creation. It’s almost a sure thing that we’ll see a followup film to this movie, considering the box office return. And who knows what other characters from the franchise will wind up getting a spinoff movie next?

The Nun is now playing in theaters everywhere. Watch the trailer below!

Synopsis: When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret.
