You’ve got to love Nicolas Cage. For whatever reason, the man doesn’t seem to be able to ever turn down a movie role, but we love him all the better for it. Recently, we reported on Cage accepting a part in the upcoming horror film Wally’s Wonderland which will see him battle evil animatronics. Not so long ago, he was also reported to star in a movie called Pig as a man on a mission to save his kidnapped pet swine. Next, he’ll be taking on his craziest role yet in the upcoming film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, where Cage will play… Nicolas Cage.
According to THR, the story will follow Nicolas Cage as himself, vying to get a major role in the next Quentin Tarantino movie while dealing with a strained relationship with his teenage daughter. Additionally, he will also occasionally speak with an “egotistical 1990s version of himself who rides him for making too many crappy movies and for not being a star anymore.” Facing massive debt, Cage winds up making a special appearance at a Mexican billionaire’s birthday party, learning the man is a huge Cage fan with hopes of showing the actor a script he’s been working on.
Things get much more Nicolas Cage-like from there, according to THR:
“While he bonds with the man, Cage is informed by the CIA that the billionaire is actually a drug cartel kingpin who has kidnapped the daughter of a Mexican presidential nominee, and is recruited by the U.S. government to get intelligence. The situation spirals even more dramatically when the Mexican brings over Cageâs daughter and his ex-wife for a reconciliation, and when their lives are on the line, Cage takes on the role of a lifetime.”
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is written by Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, with Gormican also on board to direct. Cage had reportedly signed on when he was shown the script with an accompanying letter from Gormican, which stressed that the story is a love letter to the actor and isn’t meant to poke fun at him. The exact numbers aren’t clear, but Cage will also be getting a payout similar to his earnings from big studio hits like National Treasure and Con Air, and this could be the biggest film for the actor in years.
Lionsgate is currently in final negotiations to pick up the film, beating out several other major suitors like HBO Max and Paramount Pictures. You can read more about the film at The Hollywood Reporter.
