This article contains spoilers for MGM + ‘s From Season 4, Episode 3
The first two episodes of From Season 4 were a whirlwind of chaos, death, and decisions for the town’s residents. Actually, that sums up the first three seasons as well. The evil seeking to control the town slowly but relentlessly beats them into despair and mental exhaustion. However, with “Merrily We Go,” the town gets a moment to catch its breath. They break into different groups to search for answers and solve the questions that continue to plague them.
Boyd (Harold Perrineau) decides to give Acosta (Samantha Brown) her freedom from jail after she stole an ambulance and tried to leave the town. She is still on edge, so Boyd puts her to work sorting through all the things they have deemed unimportant, which have been collected in a basement. Call it a dead-letter office of sorts, where the story behind these items has come to an end. Boyd wants the stories uncovered in case they are missing something. It is a combination of busy work for Acosta and another example of a desperate Boyd looking for anything that will help.
The strangest duo to end up working together has to be Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori) and Elgin (Nathan D. Simmons). While both were tricked by the powers surrounding the town, Elgin kidnapped Fatima and paid the price, and neither of them will be the same again. Fatima asks Elgin for a favor, and as we see later in the episode, it’s unclear what Fatima’s thought processes are. Still, it makes for an interesting pairing and something no one really saw coming.

Julie (Hannah Cheramy) continues her quest to learn more about her abilities, or “storywalking,” as her brother calls it. To that end, she needs some books from the old, collapsed house to learn more and enlists Randall (A.J. Simmons) to help her yet again. Actually, he invites himself along as he already knows her stubbornness is capable of getting her into a lot of trouble. It’s an interesting dynamic developing between these two, very similar and very different at the same time. It goes without saying that Randall has saved her on a few occasions now.

Ethan (Simon Webster) enlists Victor (Scott McCord) to help him look for the Lake of Tears that his dad asked him to find. They are joined by Jade (David Alpay), who is on a quest to find something that will help him access the information still locked inside him. The excursion turns out to be a mixed blessing as Jade does indeed find something to help him, but Victor is traumatized when he discovers the discarded clothes of The Man in the Yellow Suit.
His father, Henry (Robert Joy), finds him and tries to comfort him. Henry was out on a bit of a mission himself, trying to protect Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno) from doing anything foolish while grieving for her husband and investigating the bottle tree where Tabitha was transported out of town, eventually meeting Henry.
Throughout all of this, Sophia (Julia Doyle) continues to ask questions, plan, scheme, and manipulate the town without them even knowing it. Watching her pull a tooth out of the mouth of her dead “father” for a trophy was the wonderfully evil and true self shining through.
Moving in with Sara (Avery Konrad) is a well-thought-out choice, seeing as Sara was taken over by the powers in and around the town once before. Doyle continues to be a joy to watch as Sophia, flipping back and forth between good and evil with ease and making you wonder if anyone will catch on before it’s too late.
While From Season 4, Episode 3 definitely has the feel of a building block episode, there were still a lot of interesting things going on from beginning to end. Boyd, the town’s strength, continues to show his slow deterioration, both mentally and physically, as the town pushes its will on him. Breaking him is important, but the real race is on for mysteries to be solved before Sophia can destroy the town from within.
