The classic musical Grease tells the story of the budding romance between the unlikely pair of Sandy Olsson and Danny Zuko. In the end of the movie, Sandy and Danny can be seen in a convertible that flies into the air, taking the pair into the sky. One fan theory purports that this ending isn’t quite as happy as it seems, as what’s really going on is that Sandy is dying, and this is all a vivid hallucination playing out in her brain.
In the beginning of the story, it is revealed that Danny and Sandy met when he saved her from nearly drowning. The theory goes that Sandy never made it out of the beach alive after all, as the oxygen deprivation from being underwater put her into a coma. In her dying moments, she envisions a complete fantasy of a whirlwind romance, culminating in Sandy flying straight towards the clouds. This is said to symbolize the character’s ascension into Heaven.
Fans have been debating this theory for years, and even John Travolta finally weighed in on it earlier this year. “I love it. Imaginations are awesome,” the actor told USA Today.
