7The Cars movie franchise is post-apocalyptic
The Cars movie series is about a fictional world that is dominated by living motor vehicles. They are completely able to take care of themselves without the need for human maintenance, and as such, there are no people anywhere to be found. Maybe this is because humans don’t exist in this fantasy universe, which has always been populated by cars. Or, perhaps it’s actually because the humans have been completely eradicated by the vehicles, and the world is actually post-apocalyptic?
This theory comes with a lot of credence, as it was suggested by Cars creative director Jay Ward. “We have autonomous car technology coming in right now. It’s getting to the point where you can sit back in the car and it drives itself,” Ward explained. “Imagine in the near-future when the cars keep getting smarter and smarter and after one day they just go, ‘Why do we need human beings anymore? They’re just slowing us down. It’s just extra weight, let’s get rid of them.'”
Ward adds that the cars absorb the personalities of the last person to drive them, which explains their distinct identities. It oddly makes sense, but it’s hard to accept Lightning McQueen being a cold-oiled murderer.
