Some of the most intriguing horror games are the ones which have never been released. Let’s cry a little inside as we go through ten of the most promising horror video games that we’ll never, ever get to play.
5Game of Death (Xbox, PS2, PC)
Developed by Burns Entertainment Software in 2001, Game of Death‘s graphics might look a bit dated, but its gameplay sounds compelling. Horror director Joerg Guttgereit (Necromantik) created the game’s plot and its characters, intending on giving gamers a terrifying psychological horror experience.
In Game of Death, players would have controlled a young man horribly wounded in an automobile accident. With the player laid up in the hospital, his consciousness enters a bizarre world pitting him in battle with some of history’s most infamous serial killers. Over 40 real-life maniacs would have been featured in the game, including Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Fritz Haarmann. To defeat them, players must discover the killer’s weakness and use their own weaponry against them.
Interestingly, the game would keep track of your moral compass. Players were encouraged to only kill during “special circumstances,” such as self-defense. While not necessary, maintaining the high ground would ensure your character’s survival in the hospital at the end of the game. It sounds intriguing, but the game will never see the light of day, as the developer was unable to find a publisher willing to take it on.
