Some of the most intriguing horror games are the ones which have never been released. Let’s cry a little inside as we go through ten of the most promising horror video games that we’ll never, ever get to play.
4Sadness (Nintendo Wii)
When it was first announced in 2006 as an exclusive title for the Nintendo Wii, Sadness was quick to get attention from horror fans. Hyped as having a heavier emphasis on psychological horror, the game was going to feature black-and-white visuals to give it a gothic look. It was going to make good use of the Wii’s motion controls by letting players use every object in the environment as a potential weapon.
Sadness was set in the Ukraine in the early 1900s. The story begins when central character Maria Lengyel and her son Alexander are left stranded after their train derails. With Alexander now blind, keeping him safe gets increasingly difficult as the game would progress, with the child’s behavior only getting stranger (and creepier). Player choices would also have dire consequences, branching the story out into ten possible endings.
Although it sounds incredible, there is no evidence to suggest a playable build or demo was ever finished. This turned its developer Nibris into a laughing stock in the gaming community, as despite its promotion, it seemed clear that the game wasn’t making good progress. Unfortunately, the company eventually folded in 2010, taking Sadness right down the drain along with it.
