Some of the most intriguing horror games are the ones which have never been released. Let’s cry a little inside as we go through ten of the most promising horror video games that we’ll never, ever get to play.
6Freddy vs. Jason: Hell Unbound (Arcade, PS2, Dreamcast, PC)
Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees have both had their own official video games, but they almost had one where they starred together. The idea came about during the hiatus between Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X, with New Line trying for years to get a Freddy vs. Jason movie off the ground. Although plans for the film were constantly stalling, the choice was made to bring the battle to another medium for the video game Freddy vs. Jason: Hell Unbound.
As revealed in Dustin MacNeill’s book Slash of the Titans, A Nightmare on Elm Street novelist David Bergantino was hands-on with the creative process. By 2001, the writer had envisioned a story with both Freddy and Jason going to Hell, tasked with fighting their way through demons back up to Earth. Players would choose which of the two murderers they’d want to play as, defeating a version of the other character at the end of each level. Whichever one manages to escape Hell first would then be able to take on the world, slaughtering its inhabitants by the thousands.
The idea of Freddy and Jason fighting demons was a way to circumvent the controversial nature of having them murdering innocent teenagers instead. Of course, things have changed since then, and players can now play as Freddy in Dead by Daylight and as Jason in Friday the 13th: The Game. The workaround by having the game set in Hell was a good compromise, but it just wasn’t meant to be. Because Hell Unbound was mandated to be released at the same time as the Freddy vs. Jason movie, it wound up being abandoned as various problems continued to stall the film’s production.
