Some of the most intriguing horror games are the ones which have never been released. Let’s cry a little inside as we go through ten of the most promising horror video games that we’ll never, ever get to play.
2George A. Romero’s City of the Dead (Xbox, PS2, PC)
Filmmaking pioneer George A. Romero is the person we have to thank for zombie fiction as we know it. Beginning with his film Night of the Living Dead, Romero would helm several zombie movies which would serve as inspiration for countless other films. With titles like Resident Evil popularizing zombies in video games, developer Kuju Entertainment sought to make a new zombie game based on Romero’s Dead movies. Announced in December 2004, City of the Dead was intended to be the first of many Romero-based games, with plans to potentially adapt some of his actual films.
The game takes place on a fictional island called Ningún Futuro, which means “no future.” When military testing on cadavers goes awry in the worst way possible, the dead begin to feast upon the living, starting a new outbreak. Horror legend Tom Savini was also confirmed to have his voice and likeness used for a playable character in the game named William “Red” McLean.
Just months after its official announcement, production on the title also seemed to be going along great. Publisher Hip Interactive unveiled gameplay footage for City of the Dead at E3 in 2005, and people were impressed by what they saw. Sadly, however, that would be the final update ever given on the game. City of the Dead was quietly cancelled soon after, likely due to its publisher’s financial problems. The game was intended to be released in March 2006.
