For the most part, wrestling fans are happy with simple wrestling games that just feature their favorite stars grappling in the ring. Still, some developers have tried adding wacky gimmicks to wrestling-themed titles, giving us these totally bizarre video games…

The Nintendo 64 game WWF No Mercy is considered by many retro gamers to be the greatest wrestling game of all time. Like other WWF and WCW games on the console, No Mercy was developed by the AKI Corporation. After walking away from big-name pro wrestling leagues with these titles, AKI would team up with EA to use their wrestling engine to create a new game known as Def Jam Vendetta. The game was released in 2003 on both the Sony PS2 and Nintendo Gamecube systems.

Who needs rap battles when hip hop artists can have wrestling matches instead? That’s the concept behind Def Jam Vendetta. While some of the characters are fictional, the bulk of the roster consists of real-life rappers who were signed to Def Jam at the time. This includes names like DMX, Ludacris, Method Man, Redman, Ghostface Killah, Capone, Keith Murray, and DJ Funkmaster Flex.

Unlike some of the other titles on this list, Def Jam Vendetta is surprisingly very fun to play. Its rapper-centric roster is rather strange from a narrative standpoint, but the gameplay is smooth and the controls are great. Due to its positive reception, the game would later spawn the sequel Def Jam Vendetta: Fight for NY.
