Masters of the Universe reboot

Since the last live-action Masters of the Universe film was released in 1987, a reboot has been talked about several times, but we have yet to see it come to fruition. Now, it is being reported that writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum are finalizing talks to pen the new reboot draft. Holloway and Marcum together wrote Iron Man (2008) and the upcoming Men in Black: International (2019).

The film is to be directed by the Nee Brothers, Aaron and Adam Nee. A draft of the reboot has already been written by David S. Goyer, but there is no word on whether or not it will be rewritten. Goyer, who will be an executive producer on the film, also wrote the screenplay for the Untitled Terminator Reboot, which is still in post-production. Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch, and DeVon Franklin will act as producers.

The original Masters of the Universe starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as his rival, Skeletor. Directed by Gary Goddard and written by David Odell, the film was a box office bomb and received mostly negative reviews upon release. It was even nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Billy Barty’s performance as Gwildor. Despite all of that and its current 17% Rotten Tomatoes rating, some fans look back at its sheer campiness a bit more fondly.

The news of a reboot comes at an opportunistic time when ’80s nostalgia is at a seemingly all-time high. We even have a new animated series reboot for She-Ra and the Princesses of Power that has premiered on Netflix. The show has been very well received by critics and fans alike.

Of course, the question we want to know the most for a Masters of the Universe reboot is- who will play He-Man and Skeletor? Time will tell, as long as this reboot doesn’t get stuck in development hell. Fingers crossed it all works out because this is one film that can only benefit from a fleshed-out reboot.
