From filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, Glass is now available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital outlets. It’s the third installment of a superhero trilogy first established by Shyamalan in the year 2000 with Unbreakable. His 2016 psychological thriller Split was revealed to be a sequel to Unbreakable, linking the two stories in the ending of the movie. Glass effectively bridges the gap between the two films, bringing in characters from each to tell a new story.
While a satisfying film to watch, Glass seems to fall just a little short of living up to both of its predecessors. Still undoubtedly a more entertaining watch than some of Shyamalan’s other movies, it’s hard not to feel at least a twinge of disappointment once the credits start to roll. Perhaps it was the hype and the high expectations going in as a sequel to two of the filmmaker’s best-received films. It just seems that while Unbreakable and Split both left us with shocking yet satisfying endings, the conclusion of Glass just felt a bit underwhelming. The ride there is enjoyable enough, just don’t expect to go out on a high note.
There may be some plot-related issues I found in the film, but I can’t argue that it was well shot. The cinematography is pretty on point here, and the movie will especially look pretty if you’re getting the 4K Ultra HD version. Credit must also be given to the marvelous cast involved in the film. James McAvoy, Samuel L. Jackson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Sarah Paulson, and even Bruce Willis were all at their best here, adding a lot to the overall enjoyment of the movie. There are enough of the right ingredients here to make the film a good watch, but the story could have probably been improved with some rewrites.
What really sells the home video release of Glass is just how packed it is with bonus features. There are absolutely tons of deleted scenes to expand upon the story, each with an introduction from Shyamalan to explain why it was cut. This includes an alternate opening to the film which ties into a very important plot point revealed later in the movie. You can also watch many featurettes and cast & crew interviews to find out even more. If you’re thinking of going with the ordinary DVD release, just keep in mind the 4K and Blu-ray combo packs come with exclusive bonus features not available on the DVD.
