Just over a week ago, Swamp Thing had its debut on the DC Universe. The series is nothing short of amazing, and we say it’s one of the best DC adaptations ever. Still, despite becoming an instant hit with both viewers and critics, news hit the web that the network was pulling the plug on the show. While the remainder of the season will still stream weekly on DC Universe, it has been confirmed Swamp Thing will not be back for a second season.
So, what the heck happened? In a recent post on Instagram, executive producer James Wan admits he isn’t even sure what led to the show’s quick demise. “Don’t really know or understand why Swamp Thing was cancelled, but I can tell you this — all the cast and crew, and producing/writing team poured their hearts into this,” Wan writes. “Really proud of everyone’s hard work. Go watch episode 2, and immortalize these 10 episodes. Swampy deserves it.”
A lot of money went into the production of Swamp Thing, the value of which can be seen when watching the show. We could speculate that the issue of the show ending simply comes down to a matter of money. Because WarnerMedia is internally preparing for a new be-all, end-all streaming service to first release later this year, perhaps Warner Bros. would rather funnel that money into that rather than new episodes of Swamp Thing. Still, as mentioned, this is all just speculation, and it’s just a shame to see the rug pulled out from under poor Swampy like that.
