As previously reported, an all-new live-action Mortal Kombat movie is currently in the works from producer James Wan. Directed by Simon McQuoid, the film is set to start shooting in Australia later this year in preparation for its 2021 release date. Now, the cast of the new film is starting to take shape, as the project has just cast one the franchise’s most popular characters.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, actor and martial artist Joe Taslim has been officially cast as the new Sub-Zero. Taslim first made a name for himself starring in the Indonesian action flick The Raid before later picking up roles in Fast & Furious 6 and Star Trek Beyond. Taslim also starred in the lead role of the Netflix movie The Night Comes for Us, which debuted on the service last year. You can watch the trailer for it below.

The original Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 is still one of the most well-known video game based films of all time. Following the video game series fairly closely, it told the story of a fighting tournament hosted by Shang Tsung, bringing together all of the greatest fighters in the world. In that movie, Sub-Zero was played by François Petit. Other members of the cast included Christopher Lambert as Raiden, Robin Shou as Liu Kang, Bridgette Wilson as Sonya Blade, Linden Ashby as Johnny Cage, and Trevor Goddard as Kano.

Mortal Kombat is just one of many video game based movies currently on the way. Other titles include UnchartedSonic the Hedgehog, and Monster Hunter. Time will tell if the new Mortal Kombat turns out to be the best one yet, or if it will be more akin to Mortal Kombat: Annihiliation. As of now, the tentative release date for the film has been set for March 5, 2021.
