Old school pro wrestling fans and Nintendo 64 gamers may be happy to learn that a new wrestling game is in the works from Yuke’s and Hideyuki “Geta” Iwashita, the director of the popular video game WWF No Mercy. Created for the rookie wrestling organization All Elite Wrestling, the game does not yet have an official title or release date, but an official teaser trailer has been released. The trailer gives fans a peek at the action to be featured in the game along with a look at AEW wrestlers Kenny Omega, Chris Jericho, and Hikaru Shida.
The action in the ring does look reminiscent of the playstyle of WWF No Mercy and other N64 wrestling games. Its art style is a bit different, presenting fairly cartoonish versions of the AEW stars. What will matter most is the gameplay itself and if it’s as addictive as WWF No Mercy, which many wrestling fans still consider to be the greatest wrestling video game of all time. Without a doubt, it will certainly help to have Iwashita on board, as players of the classic N64 game may be interested in trying the new title — even with no familiarity of AEW.
After parting ways with WWF/WWE, Iwashita directed the bizarre 2003 wrestling game Def Jam Vendetta. Using the same engine from the N64 wrestling games, Def Jam Vendetta pitted famous real-life hip hop artists against each other, including names like DMX, Ludacris, Method Man, Redman, Ghostface Killah, and DJ Funkmaster Flex. Despite the odd premise, the game was a hit because of its addictive wrestling gameplay. Let’s hope Iwashita is able to recapture that magic once again with the AEW game.
