Filmmaker Macon Blair (I Don’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore), known for his acting roles in a plethora of Jeremy Saulnier films (Blue Ruin, Murder Party, Green Room), has finished the primary shooting for his upcoming reboot of The Toxic Avenger. The original 1984 cult-classic film was directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. Blair released an image on his Twitter that the film was wrapped in Bulgaria.

The 1984 Troma film, starring Mitch Cohen as Toxie, followed a quiet janitor named Melvin who falls into a vat of toxic waste, and emerges as the Toxic Avenger. The hideous hero has super strength, hellbent on making criminals pay with their lives. The film spawned three sequels, a kid’s TV cartoon show, comics, a video game, and a stage musical. Blair’s reboot will be the first Toxic Avenger film released in more than 20 years.
Along with both Kauffman and Herz producing the new film, Blair has gathered an excellent cast for his reboot. Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage will be taking on the role of Toxie, with Kevin Bacon will take on the film’s antagonist role. Other cast members include Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay (Room, Doctor Sleep), Taylour Paige (White Boy Rick), Julia Davis (Love Actually), Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso), and Jonny Coyne (The Nun).
Though no official release date has been released, we expect a 2022 release.
