The Crow starring Brandon Lee
Miramax Films

Bill Skarsgård, the actor known for playing Pennywise in Andy Muschietti’s IT films and the unsettling stranger known only as “The Kid” in Hulu’s Castle Rock, has been tapped to star as Eric Draven, the title character in a new reimagining of The CrowSkarsgård has a reputation for playing deeply disturbed and conflicted characters, so the role of Draven fits well within the style of his previous works.

The new film will be directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman, Ghost in the Shell) and written by Zach Baylin, who was just nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for King Richard. Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter FKA twigs will also star beside Skarsgård, most likely as Eric Draven’s wife. Like the 1994 film starring Brandon Lee, The Crow is based on an original graphic novel created by James O’Barr and published by Caliber Comics in 1989.

Regarding the new project, director Sanders said:

“The Crow is beautiful, dark, poetic and sometimes disturbing. It is a story of love, loss, grief, and revenge. It is a great honor to revisit James O’Barr’s iconic comic and reimagine The Crow as a foreboding voice of today.”

Though the original film was surrounded by bad luck, resulting in the death of Brandon Lee and even landing on one of Shudder’s Cursed Films episodes, the gritty and gothic vigilante film has become a cult classic throughout film fandom and especially the horror community. The original film was a massive sleeper hit at the box office and spawned three sequels and a TV series, but the franchise never regained the love and magic the first film provided.
