Owners of the Nintendo Switch will be rather pleased with Nintendo’s showing at E3 this year. Rebirth of Metroid Prime 4, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and now Mario has made it into the fray. That’s right, Nintendo finally dropped further information on Super Mario Odyssey.
From the gameplay video, it seems the game returns to an open-world system. We’ve seen this before: Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. The open world gives the game so much more freedom for players to explore. Usually, Mario is just exploring the Mushroom Kingdom, but not this time. Odyssey has our hero exploring semi-realistic places, like New Donk City. Clearly based on New York, it comes complete with skyscrapers, traffic, and lifelike people.
In this new chapter in Mario’s story, he will have more animal friends. Since Super Mario World, Yoshi has been a solid companion, as well as a character in his own right. In Odyssey, you’ll have more than the green dino. In the gameplay video at E3, Mario jumped on the back of a lion statue, only to have it spring to life.
Another new feature is that you can obtain a myriad of different hats. I know this was first done in Super Mario 64, but it’s a lot different this time. His standard red hat has a name, Cappy. This is something that Mario can use to smack or control enemies, create platforms, and have it act as your sat nav around the new world.
Keeping in the theme of the previous Mario games, Bowser is back and, keeping in tradition has kidnapped the princess. At the trailer’s climax, Mario is chucked from a building by a metal caterpillar. This could be a boss or something larger for us to expect.
The Nintendo Switch has been out some months now and the games are finally coming for it. Super Mario Odyssey will be jumping into your hands on October 27th, 2017.
