In 2016, Bethesda and id Software released the much anticipated reboot of DOOM. To many fans and critics, DOOM 2016 captured the chaotic, bloody good times from the original series that started the first-person shooter genre. Even two years later, the DOOM reboot is still fun to play and has a lot of content to keep players busy.
At this year’s E3, Bethesda and id Software gave fans a first look at DOOM Eternal and promised more to come at QuakeCon 2018. This past weekend at QuakeCon, the game companies delivered on that promise and debuted the visceral gameplay of DOOM Eternal, which is the sequel to the 2016 reboot. Creative director Hugo Martin and game director Marty Stratton took to the stage, updating the gaming community and fans on the gory tidbits. The gameplay reveal gave DOOM fans exactly what we wanted to see, combining beautifully smooth graphics while remaining gory as ever.
The developers showed off some new weapons, as well as some familiar enemy types such as the Arachnotron, Mancubus and the new Marauder, which looks like the Demon Slayer and even has its own story. They also mentioned a new system called “Destructible Demons.” As you fight Hell’s legions, enemy types take on damage as you hit them. There is also a new system where you can invade a friend’s game as a demon, or your friends can invade your game. Players can also choose to play alone, so there are options no matter how you like to game. The Demon Slayer also has a new melee feature to make gutting or cleaving Hell’s finest that much more of a joy.
DOOM Eternal will be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and the Nintendo Switch. Amazon’s pre-order page claims that the game will be “released on December 31, 2019,” however a date has not been confirmed just yet.
