9The babies on Rugrats only exist in Angelica’s mind
If any of the previous entries are depressing you, you’re gonna want to buckle in for this next one about Rugrats. To refresh your memory, the classic Nicktoon is about the exploits of a group of babies who seem abnormally intelligent. Not only can they communicate with each other, they are able to be understood by their older cousin, Angelica. What if this is because the babies do not actually exist, and were all created by Angelica in her mind?
Having imaginary friends is something many children do, but the theory gets more disturbing once the backstories for the babies are explained. The idea is that each of their stories are based in reality, with Angelica imagining the children as real as a way to deal with their premature deaths. Tommy was stillborn, which is why his father went crazy and builds toys in the basement. Chuckie and his mother were killed in a car accident, making his dad neurotic. Meanwhile, Phil and Lil originate from their parents aborting a pregnancy, with Angelica imagining them as twins of both genders as the sex was not determined.
Only Dil is the real baby, which is why Angelica is unable to communicate with or control him in the same way as the others. Angelica’s friend Susie is real too, and only plays along with Angelica’s hallucinations, understanding that it’s her coping mechanism to handle these tragedies.
