A fan petition has been launched for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Danny DeVito to play Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and thousands of people have already added their signatures. “The only man able to take the throne after Hugh Jackman,” the Change.org petition states about DeVito. “We believe that if Wolverine is to make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that the only man able to pull it off is Danny DeVito.”
Obviously, the Wolverine character is synonymous with Hugh Jackman, who brought the superhero to life over the course of many feature films. He has since retired from the role, leading to speculation on when we might see a new version of the X-Men character with another actor in the part. As of this writing, over 6,300 people have signed the petition, bringing it quickly close to its preliminary goal of 7,500 signatures.
Although these fan petitions can sometimes be fun, it can be argued that people are starting to get carried away. When a similar petition was launched for HBO to remake Season 8 of Game of Thrones with all-new writers, over a million people quickly signed it. Given the time and money spent on creating the final GoT episodes we were given, HBO is not likely to even entertain the idea. It would seem that the goal is more to ensure that those involved in the show are hearing their complaints, but as the series has ended, how is the petition helping anyone?
In any case, at least the Danny DeVito as Wolverine petition is humorous. For what it’s worth, this is one movement I’m more than willing to add my name to. You can get in on it yourself by heading on over to Change.org, but no matter how many of us sign it, I wouldn’t get my hopes up too high.
