The Gearbox E3 2021 conference started strong with Randy Pitchford taking us on a guided tour of the Borderlands movie set. He talked with director Eli Roth, as well as Edgar Ramirez who is playing Atlas, a character hinted at but never seen in the game. Anything important in the background was blurred unfortunately, including Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina. They seem like they’re having a blast filming, and revealed they’re over half-way done production.

Since it was shown off at Summer Game Fest Kickoff, not much of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was revealed here. We saw the same trailer, and got confirmation of Wyverns (but not your usual Wyverns) and Goblins being among the many enemy types. In a trailer breakdown with developer Matt Cox posted since Summer Game Fest Kickoff, the game is confirmed to take place shortly after “Assault on Dragon Keep,” a DLC expansion for Borderlands 2, and within a game called Bunkers and Badasses. Grenades will be replaced with spells, the game will have melee weapons, will keep in Borderlands fashion with 1-4 people multiplayer, and it looks like armor will replace shields.
We got some new info regarding Tribes of Midgard. In the game, the player must return to Midgard to protect Yggdrasil, the world tree. When you enter the game, you start with nothing and must explore for resources so you can create gear, start and upgrade your villages, and protect yourself against the world. Explore and gather during the day, but make sure you’re fortified at night, as that’s when Hel’s creatures rise and create havoc against your village. Also, there’s no time to waste as every couple of days, a giant will emerge in the world and make its way toward your village, causing devastating destruction. To protect Yggdrasil, you must take it down. The game will feature 8-player classes and will be playable solo, but this one may be better with friends.
Next, we got a look at the new Godfall expansion “Fire and Darkness,” arriving on August 10th. “Fire and Darkness” adds new enemies, bosses, trophies, and cosmetics. It was also announced that Godfall is coming to the PS4 alongside the “Fire and Darkness” release on the same day. The PlayStation 4 version will come with a free next-gen upgrade. Additionally, the PS4 release will mark the arrival of cross-play between the two gens (and PC) as well as matchmaking.
Godfall will also get a free update called “Lightbringer,” which brings a new loot type called Cursed Loot. Players will need to complete objectives to lift the curse to use the Cursed Loot. The update will also add tons of new cosmetics and 40 new items of loot.
Teased throughout the show, Homeworld 3 is in production. This will mark the first game in the real-time strategy game series since 2003.
The Borderlands set segment wrapped up at the end of the show, with Randy finally talking to Kevin Hart. The actor was wearing a big coat and insisted that Randy tell the people at home that he is, indeed, tall. Hart also wanted us to know that we, don’t know what he’s doing, don’t know how he’s doing, don’t know why he’s doing it, don’t know his commitment, and don’t know his persistence. This wrapped up that particular part of the show (and the show itself).
That’s a wrap on Gearbox E3 2021, and day 1 of the event. Stay tuned for more coverage!
