Back in 2016, the creative rights to special effects guru Stan Winston’s Pumpkinhead were sold to Peter Block, an executive producer of the Saw franchise. In 2017, Block hired writer Nate Atkins to write the script of a remake with the plan of a 2017 release, which never got underway.
Now, Bloody Disgusting is reporting that the wheels finally may be turning over at Paramount Players (a label of Paramount Pictures) and that the next steps are being taken toward the release of a remake of the classic monster movie. Per the article, production is officially ramping up, the script has been completed, and news of a director should be announced in the upcoming months.
In the original 1988 Pumpkinhead, Lance Henriksen (Aliens) is a grieving father who conjures up a frightening beast to deal with the group of teenagers responsible for his son’s death. Though Stan Winston was only attached to the first film, it spawned three sequels and an interactive first-person shooter game for DOS.

Pumpkinhead was one of two feature-length films that Stan Winston directed, the other being a family-fantasy film titled A Gnome Named Gnorm. Since the practical effects were the cornerstone of the original film, we hope the remake follows suit with its excellent creature creation.
We should know more about the planned Pumpkinhead remake in the coming months as details are released. What do you think about the film getting the remake treatment?
