10Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Moon Studios

Ori and the Blind Forest is one of those visually stunning indie darling platformers that gained a big following, and rightfully so. The game featured a story full of heartbreak and adventure and provided a great gaming experience. The sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, was announced at E3 2017 and will hit Xbox One and PC sometime later this year.

9Far Cry New Dawn

Ubisoft

It was only last month at The Game Awards that Ubisoft announced their follow-up to 2018’s Far Cry 5. Picking up right after Far Cry 5’s disastrous ending, New Dawn will offer players a new type of Far Cry experience with new outlandish weapons, new animals, and new mechanics all with a post-apocalyptic spin. Far Cry: New Dawn is set to release February 15th on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

8Gears 5

The Coalition

Gears 5 is the next installment in the Gears of War franchise set to release sometime this year. The game will be a direct sequel to 2016’s Gears of War 4 with Kait Diaz, JD Fenix, Del Walker, and Marcus Fenix returning, the former being the main focus this time around. In the sequel, Kait must uncover the secrets to the origins of the Locust and the Diaz family.

Also said to release sometime this year is Funko’s Gears POP! mobile game, the toy company’s first attempt at a game for mobile devices.

7Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order

Team Ninja

One of the more surprising announcements from 2018 happened not at E3, but at the The Game Awards. With a release date for 2019, Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is the sequel to Ultimate Alliance 2, which came out ten years ago. Another surprise was that this game will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch. The game’s roster is said to be heavily influenced by the MCU, with Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Inhumans all featured in the trailer. The X-Men, Green Goblin, Sentinels, and Kingpin were also present.

This is the first Marvel game to be published by Nintendo.

6Mortal Kombat 11

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

Fatalities and Brutalities are back with Mortal Kombat 11, and new gameplay elements are also being introduced like the “Fatal Blow,” which a player can use when their fighters health drops below 30%, and the “Krushing Blow,” which is an enhanced version of a special move, but can only be triggered once certain requirements are met. The game will have a 25-fighter roster at launch, with Shao Kahn being a pre-order bonus. A reveal event was held on January 17th where it was announced that WWE superstar Ronda Rousey was joining the game as the voice of Sonya Blade.

Mortal Kombat 11 will release on April 23rd on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.

2019 video games
4A Games

A follow-up to Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, Metro Exodus is next in the line of games based off the books of Dmitry Glukhovsky. The game is set to launch on February 15th and will follow the events of the first two games. Exodus will be a first-person shooter set in the post-apocalyptic frozen tundra of the former Russian Federation following a nuclear war 23 years prior. The player will have to defend themselves against mutated creatures and hostile humans armed with an arsenal of makeshift weapons.

Metro: Exodus will be available on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

4Days Gone

Sony Interactive Entertainment

After facing delays, Days Gone finally has a tentative release date of April 26th. The game, first announced at E3 2016, will be a third-person, action-adventure survival horror set in a post-apocalyptic world. You’ll play as Deacon St. John, once an outlaw, now a drifter and bounty hunter. Two years before the game’s setting, a pandemic outbreak caused the eradication of a majority of the population and turned a good amount of those left into zombie-like ‘Freakers’.

Days Gone will be exclusive to the PS4.

3Outer Worlds

Obsidian

This is the game I’m most excited for this year. Obsidian (of Fallout: New Vegas fame) is back with their action-RPG game, Outer Worlds. Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, who are best known for creating the Fallout franchise, are directors on Outer World and describe the game as “the combination of [Boyarsky’s] dark morbidity and Tim’s silliness.”

The protagonist awakes onboard a ship that has gone astray in the far reaches of space. They begin their journey to investigate the true nature of the mega corporations that are colonizing and terraforming these alien worlds. The game is said to feature a branching story that reacts to the player’s choices

2Kingdom Hearts III

Square Enix

Kingdom Hearts III is actually out now, and will definitely be remembered as one of 2019’s biggest releases. Since being released back in 2013 at E3, the game has faced extensive delays pushing it all the way to 2019, almost 6 years after being announced. Kingdom Hearts III features worlds from various popular Disney and Pixar properties like Toy Story, Big Hero 6, Frozen, Monsters Inc., and tons more.

1Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order

Electronic Arts

There’s not a lot of info out about Jedi Fallen Order, but we know that it’s set to release this year from Respawn Entertainment. The game will be set a few years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and will feature an original story centered around a padawan following the events of Order 66. Jedi Fallen Order is also set to be single-player only. I don’t have a whole lot of faith in this game due in part to the fact that EA is publishing it and they haven’t had the best track record with Star Wars games. That being said, if this game actually gets released then I’ll be very excited to play it.

Rumored 2019 Releases

Here are four video games that are rumored to release this year, but no official word as of yet.

  • Last of Us 2 was announced back in 2016 and will focus more on Ellie this time around. It will be set 5 years after the events of the first game. Writer Neil Druckmann stated that while Last of Us centered on love, Last of Us 2 will center on hate.
  • Ghosts of Tsushima was unveiled in 2017 and a gameplay trailer was shown off at E3 last year. The game is set in 1274 on the island of Tsushima during the Mongol invasion of Japan. The gameplay looks fantastic and we can’t wait for this PlayStation 4 exclusive title.
  • Death Stranding is starting to enter Half-Life 3 status as people are wondering if its ever going to come out. After Hideo Kojima’s exit from Konami, he formed his own studio and got to work on his own IP. Reuniting with Norman Reedus and Guillermo Del Toro from the failed PT project and adding Mads Mikkelsen to the mix, Death Stranding is shaping up to be a star-studded masterpiece.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 is CD Projekt Red’s next project. Cyberpunk 2077 was announced all the way back in 2012, but we got a good taste of it at E3 2018 that definitely got the buzz for the game going. The game is set in 2077 in the dystopian Night City, California. It will be a first-person shooter set in an open world with six distinct districts. When the game launches, it will be available on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
