John Krasinski will direct A Quiet Place 2 in addition to working on the film’s screenplay. Per Deadline, Emily Blunt has also finalized her deal to return in the upcoming sequel, reprising her role from the original movie. Child actors Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe are also in talks to return. In an Instagram post, Krasinski noted his enthusiasm, saying that it’s “time to go back.” He also confirms the sequel’s release date as May 15, 2020. Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing.
We were on hand to cover the world premiere of A Quiet Place at last year’s SXSW, and it absolutely blew us away. It wound up becoming an even bigger hit with audiences upon its wide release. On a budget of $17 million, the pulled in $50.2 million in its opening weekend in the United States. Domestically, it finished its theatrical run with $188 million, earning a total of $340 million worldwide. A sequel seemed inevitable, and it’s great to see that it’s in good hands with Krasinski returning to direct the film.
This is fantastic news, although it’s not exactly surprising. Krasinski had already been attached to write the movie, and we previously reported on the confirmation he would be somehow “involved” with the sequel. It seemed likely he’d come around, but now knowing that it’s official means it’s okay to start feeling more excited for the upcoming movie’s release.
A Quiet Place is certainly one of the best movies to come out of 2018. We’ll see if A Quiet Place 2 can muster the same results for the year 2020, but it’s definitely promising considering all of the right pieces are here. It does feel like there’s plenty more ground to cover in this interesting world, so it might make for compelling viewing to see where Krasinski takes the story next.
